Growth Groups host their own Geddits!

‘Get God, Get Life. Geddit?’
This catchy tagline has been the hallmark of CERC’s yearly evangelistic event, ‘Geddit?’.
With the mission of reaching out to people across the Klang Valley and Malaysia, coupled with an increasing number of members equipped to preach the gospel, the church sought to make the gospel more accessible. To achieve this, ‘Geddit?’ had been introduced at the Growth Group (GG) level to effectively minister to individuals from similar backgrounds and vicinities through a more localised approach.
Traditionally, past ‘Geddit?’ events transformed the church into a restaurant-like setting designed to foster gospel conversations. Adorned with eye-catching decorations, thought-provoking performances, interactive games, and a specially curated menu, the setting created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for discussing life and faith. These events were major church-wide evangelistic efforts that brought people together in an inviting environment.
However, as the church’s numbers have grown steadily over the years, ‘Geddit?’ in Growth Groups (GGs) was introduced in 2024 to enhance personal connections and discipleship. This shift allowed for more localized outreach, enabling smaller groups to foster deeper relationships and more meaningful discussions. Additionally, this approach provided regular church members with opportunities to practice preaching in small group settings—a rare opportunity that is usually reserved for pastors or church apprentices.
Mums GG exemplified this localized approach. Designed for young mothers raising godly households, Mums GG provides a platform to share the struggles of motherhood, gain wisdom from more experienced mothers, and find encouragement in persevering as Christian mothers and wives learning God’s word together. In light of the festive season, Mums GG recently hosted their own Geddit Christmas lunch on the theme of ‘Real Hope’, based on 1 Peter 1:3-5.

This was no ordinary Geddit event, but a heartwarming family affair with mums, dads, and children all gathered under one roof. Held at Leetou Pods Café, the venue was lively with chatter, laughter, and the pitter-patter of little feet. The designated play area kept the children entertained while the mums immersed themselves in the event, and the dads took the opportunity to bond over coffee and meals.

Bonding over a stick-y situation
The children delighted in a storytelling session on ‘The Joy of Christmas’ and an exciting craft-making activity. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, making it both a joyful and dynamic event. Ministering to guests amidst the excitement proved to be challenging, yet it also highlighted the beauty of sharing the gospel in a real-life, family-centred setting.

This Christmas Geddit in GG was a milestone for Mums GG—it was their largest ‘Geddit?’ event to date. Reflecting on the preparations, Jan, a committed member of Mums GG and a devoted mother of two, shared:
“There is always a lot of work that goes on the ground among the GG members to get ready for the event. It ranges from looking for the right venue, deciding on the food, deciding how much to spend, the speaker for the event, and ultimately of course, inviting guests. I’m glad that the whole GG hustled and worked hard to get the event going, especially with inviting all their friends and guests. That was encouraging.”
Jan, who is currently in her third trimester of her third pregnancy, also spoke candidly about the struggles and difficulties of navigating this pregnancy while raising a young family. Balancing a demanding schedule while battling exhaustion was a daily challenge.
“I was not myself for a good many weeks. It was like being in depression I suppose, just too tired to do anything, constantly needing to rest. I felt very useless… I’m a very hard worker, and so when I can’t work hard, I feel stressed about the accumulated work and backlog,” she admitted. Yet, amidst these struggles, she found comfort in God’s promises. Encouraging the young mothers to persevere, she read from 1 Peter 1:3-9, reminding them of the real hope found in Christ. Another member of Mums GG, Gene, followed with a short talk on the hope Christians hold: the gift of a living God who speaks and acts according to His word, who has sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save His people.
Mums GG is just one of many Growth Groups that carried out ‘Geddit?’ in GGs over the past year. This approach served the dual-purpose of expanding evangelistic efforts while also providing church members with hands-on ministry training. By tailoring events to specific groups, such as young mothers or students, the church ensures that the gospel is shared in a more personal and effective manner.
“Of course the kids were a bit of chaos, but that’s always part of Mums’ ministry – chaotic kids, distracted mothers”, Jan shared. “It’s a challenging ministry for sure, but the advantage we have is that we and our guests all share one thing in common: Motherhood.” This shared experience has become a unifying factor, drawing mothers together to support one another – whether it’s catching up over a cup of coffee, scheduling playdates, or simply sharing the ups and downs of parenting, these connections extend beyond the events themselves, providing room for more evangelistic opportunities in the long run.
Moving forward, ‘Geddit?’ in GGs will continue to run alongside the larger scale ‘Geddit?’ events, reinforcing the church’s evangelistic efforts and maximizing outreach impact. By combining both approaches, CERC aims to ensure that the gospel reaches as many people as possible in a more personal and effective manner, while also striving to train and strengthen the church at the same time.
